Volunteers

École Bonaventure is a French Immersion School in the heart of the Lord Selkirk School Division. Our classrooms except for Kindergarten are all multi-age classrooms. On behalf of all the student and their teachers, thank you for volunteering to help us provide the best possible education for our students. Your presence in our school will provide all staff with valuable help. However, you are needed, you can be sure your contributions are extremely valued.

An orientation session is required before you can become a volunteer in any of our schools. Criminal and Child Abuse checks are also required. You can find more information regarding volunteer roles and responsibilities in our volunteer handbook that can be found on our website. The handbook was prepared to help assist in your role as a school volunteer and it will provide you with the guidance needed to ensure a successful experience. We hope you will feel rewarded by the appreciation of the students and staff. Thank you very much for your caring and support.

Some of our volunteer opportunities (but not limited to):

  • Classroom support (reading & or writing with students; photocopying, preparing activities, parties, field trips, enrichment programs, individual or group, etc.)

  • Office (photocopying, clerical help, fundraising, etc.)
  • Parent Council Support (special events, fundraising, hot lunches, etc.)

  • Various physical education activities: (Terry Fox Run ,Floor Curling, Tabloid Day, etc)

Tips for Volunteering

  • Communication is important.
  • We ask that you sign in and out and wear a volunteer badge.
  • Personal belongings should be kept with you or check with the teacher for an alternate safe space.
  • Use the staff washrooms and coat room.
  • Be aware and ask about our school procedures regarding life threatening allergies.
  • We have a Scent Free Policy due to sensitivities to chemicals and perfumes; avoid wearing strong smelling fragrances.
  • Cellphones should be turned off and not used during volunteer time.
  • Be warm and friendly, showing an interest in what the students are doing.
  • When working with students, encourage them to do their own thinking, giving plenty of time to answer.
  • Maintain a sense of humour.
  • If your child is attending our school, do not use recess or break times to conference with teachers about your child.
  • Our children and teachers are looking forward to your coming. If you know you will be away, please inform in advance.
  • A volunteer offers praise and encouragement, trying to build caring and supportive rapport.
  • Volunteers are many things; an extra pair of hands, an "extra measure"of personal warmth, a valuable special resource for classroom enrichment, a bridge between the instructional program and the community. We cannot buy what volunteers give to our school!
